The Philadelphia 76ers are being ranked as the sixth-best NBA championship contender by SBNation, a placement that has sparked immediate debate about a perceived lack of respect.
Why is the Philadelphia 76ers' ranking controversial?
SBNation's list placed the Minnesota Timberwolves and Toronto Raptors directly above the 76ers at fifth and fourth, respectively. Many analysts find this order questionable. The argument for Philadelphia being superior starts with their star power. LeBron James and Jaylen Brown are seen as the clear catalysts for the team's success, provided they stay healthy. Their presence alone should raise the team's standing in any preseason ranking.
Philadelphia's depth is another major point in their favor. Players like Dean Wade, KCP, and Anfernee Simons provide a bench unit that could start for other franchises. That kind of secondary talent is often what separates good teams from true title contenders. On paper, the 76ers appear to have a more complete roster from top to bottom than both Minnesota and Toronto.
Which teams ranked above the 76ers make sense?
The next three teams on the list are generally accepted as legitimate threats. The New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs both reached the NBA Finals recently, proving their playoff mettle. The Oklahoma City Thunder, slotted first, are the defending champions from the prior season. These placements are based on recent, tangible success that the 76ers are still chasing. Philadelphia aims to follow the path the Knicks blazed last season by making a surprise run to the finals.
What must the 76ers do to prove the rankings wrong?
The rankings are just preseason noise. The Philadelphia 76ers will need to let their play on the court do the talking. Consistency from their stars is non-negotiable. LeBron James and Jaylen Brown must lead the way every night, setting the tone on both ends of the floor.
Health will be a major factor throughout the long NBA season. The bench, which looks strong, needs to provide reliable minutes and scoring punch. Players will need to embrace defined roles within the system. You can track the team's progress and upcoming matchups on our schedule page. The goal is clear: use this perceived slight as fuel, stay focused, and climb the standings to earn the respect they believe they deserve.
