Philadelphia 76ers superstar Joel Embiid has been ranked as the 17th greatest center in NBA history by HoopsHype. This evaluation arrives as the Sixers look to rebound from a tough 2026 playoff run, which ended with a 114-144 loss to the New York Knicks on May 10, 2026, and a five-game losing streak.
What is Joel Embiid's NBA legacy?
Joel Embiid's career is a story of immense talent and persistent adversity. He's battled significant injuries and roster changes throughout his time in Philadelphia. But when healthy, he's established himself as one of the most dominant big men to ever play the game.
His career averages of 27.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists are staggering. Embiid was named the NBA's Most Valuable Player in 2023. He's a two-time scoring champion, a seven-time All-Star, and has earned All-NBA honors five times. The only consistent knock against his game has been his availability.
Why was Embiid ranked 17th all-time?
The HoopsHype ranking acknowledges Embiid's phenomenal per-minute production. Few players in league history can match his statistical output when he's on the court. His combination of size, mobility, and offensive skill makes him nearly unstoppable.
However, the ranking also cites his limited minutes due to regular health issues. His playoff track record is described as spotty. These factors likely prevented a higher placement among legends like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Russell. The analysis states that if Embiid can lead one fully healthy playoff run, his legacy could change dramatically.
What does this mean for the Philadelphia 76ers?
For the Philadelphia 76ers, Embiid remains the franchise cornerstone. The team's success is directly tied to his health and postseason performance. Their recent form, losing their last five games including that playoff defeat, shows the challenge.
Building a sustainable contender means managing Embiid's workload during the regular season. The front office must construct a roster that can support him deep into the playoffs. Fans can track the team's progress and his vital stats on our stats page.
Embiid's unique blend of scoring, ball-handling, and defensive ability is rare. There aren't many players who can do what he does on both ends of the floor. The Sixers' future hinges on unlocking that potential when it matters most.
