Philadelphia 76ers guard VJ Edgecombe could become the best fifth option in NBA history according to former star Jason Williams. Williams made the claim on the Hoopin N Hollerin Podcast after evaluating Edgecombe's talent and role within the team's hierarchy. Last result: Philadelphia 76ers 114-144 New York Knicks (2026-05-10).
What makes Edgecombe stand out as a fifth option?
Williams emphasized that no great NBA team in history would pass on having Edgecombe as their fifth option. He pointed to Edgecombe's innate scoring ability, particularly his knack for getting to the rim and creating shots when the paint is clogged. The former NBA star believes Edgecombe's youth and skill set give him unique potential to thrive in a supporting role.
How has Edgecombe performed recently?
In his first year, Edgecombe averaged 16 points as the third option, showing promise early in his career. His second year has seen him sharing the floor with stars like LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, which Williams argues will accelerate rather than hinder his development. Edgecombe proved his shooting touch with the Bahamas team, dropping 25 points and going 7-for-11 from three in a 100-83 win over Panama.
What role will Tyrese Maxey play in Edgecombe's growth?
Tyrese Maxey has committed to getting Edgecombe involved throughout the season, recognizing the young guard's potential. Williams suggests that the combination of FIBA experience, playing alongside elite talent like James, and Maxey's support could turn Edgecombe into a deadly future backcourt partner. The fifth option role may actually enhance his growth by allowing him to develop unorthodox offensive tools.
What comes next for Edgecombe and the 76ers?
With Philadelphia 76ers enduring a difficult stretch-recent form shows 0W-0D-5L (LLLLL, most recent first)-Edgecombe's development becomes even more critical for the team's future. His ability to attack closeouts, space the floor, and create his own shot could provide a much-needed spark. If he embraces the fifth option role as Williams describes, Edgecombe might just redefine what it means to be a high-impact role player in the modern NBA.
